Thunderbird Stadium is looking brand new! The field has been updated just in time for the upcoming school year where it will be home to UBC varsity football, soccer, and many other recreational programs.
Start date of project: May 10
End date: June 25
The new hybrid monofilament, slit film turf is stitched with the Thunderbirds logo at centre, with permanent blue coloured end zones. The field also has stitched lines for both soccer and football.
As of April 1, 2021, construction of Nobel Park field has substantially been completed. The softball field will be home to the UBC Women’s Varsity Softball team and will also be used by the community.
Field installations and upgrades include safety nettings surrounding the field, roofs on dugouts, new in-field and warning track, upgrades to fencing, and re-alignment of field to meet NCAA requirements including two bullpens.
We are entering the Grow-In Phase of development to allow the turf to re-establish itself and are aiming for an early summer opening.
The New Recreation Centre received Board 1 approval from the UBC Board of Governors in June 2020. The new facility will provide much needed recreation space including a state of the art fitness centre, three gymnasiums, an indoor track, and many other amenities.
Planning for a new recreation centre emerged from the UBC GamePlan: 20-year Recreation and Athletics Facilities Strategy, which involved public consultation and was approved by the Board of Governors in April 2017. The strategy supports UBC’s commitment to wellbeing by meeting a growing need for recreational fitness and gymnasium space.

A development permit application has been received by Campus and Community Planning for renovations to the softball diamond at Nobel Park for use by the UBC Women’s Varsity Softball team as well as the community. Proposed improvements include upgrades to the field surface and fencing, new covered dugouts, bullpens, safety netting and space for temporary bleachers and washroom facilities.
The $4.9 million dollar UBC Baseball Stadium was completed in April 2018. The state of the art facility can convert its dimensions to handle all age groups of baseball from little league to varsity. The stadium includes:
New artificial Astroturf playing surface
New LED field lights
New scoreboard
New OF padded fence, dugouts and bullpens
Seating grandstand with capacity of 480 which also includes a press box and sound system
The Wright Field turf is being replaced under warranty by Astroturf. Phase one of this project will include careful removal of the turf, assessment and repair of the underlying elastic layer, and installation of a new turf surface. The timeline for removal and replacement of the turf and associated work is approximately 6 weeks, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, 2018.
The scope for phase 2 of the project is not confirmed and will be contingent on funding, but may include items such as enhanced irrigation, modifications to the existing ball containment fence, and new bumper boards around the perimeter of the field. These elements will be scheduled to minimize impact on field use, and will occur in later Summer/Fall 2018.
The new learning facility for the Varsity Football team opened October 2015. With support from the University, learning will not only happen on the field but off the field as well. This Centre will aid in bringing academics to the forefront of the football team and help recruit future prospects for the football organization. Sitting adjacent to Thunderbird Stadium, players now have a space all their own to focus on school as much as they focus on their sport. Through the generous donations given to UBC Football Academic Centre leads the UBC’s start an evolution campaign, “the most ambitious fundraising and alumni engagement campaign in Canadian university history.”
